The Viy is based on a story of the same name: a gothic horror novel written in 1835 by the Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol. The novel begins in Ukraine, near Kiev, when a group of seminary students from the city go on summer vacation and end up wandering the countryside drunk. Lost, they spend a night in the company of an emaciated witch. A fight breaks out and one of the students, Khoma, kills the witch. It turns out, however, that the one he really killed is the beautiful daughter of an owner and now he has to sit with her body in a church for three days to protect it from evil spirits.

Educational Theatre of Zaporizhzhia National University

The Educational Theatre of Zaporizhzhia National University (ZNU) was founded in 2011 in the University’s Acting Department.

The purpose of the theater relates to the combination and sequential consolidation of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of the students: future dramaturgy and theater actors. The actors are students from the Acting Department of the ZNU. They look for innovation, which is reflected in the speeches, interesting for both adults and children. During the period from 2011 to 2024, from the Educational Theatre, numerous theatrical productions were staged, from drama to music, and choreographic projects.
